What is carpal tunnel and why does it affect pregnant women?

Coping with Pregnancy Carpal Tunnel

Pregnancy carpal tunnel happens when excess fluid builds up in the wrists and hands, then presses on a nerve and causes numbness and tingling in the fingers and hands. There are some things you can do at home to help alleviate carpal tunnel during pregnancy. These include sleeping with your hands elevated on pillows, dangling from the side of the bed and wearing a wrist support or elevation sling.

Developing carpal tunnel while pregnant can be worrying, but for most women it will be a mild condition which begins in the later stages of pregnancy, and disappears once your baby is born and the swelling associated with pregnancy goes away.

Of course there are more severe cases where a woman will experience pain, a burning sensation and a feeling of clumsiness. Symptoms can even travel up the arm and can begin to handicap a woman considerably. If the condition gets to this stage you must always consult a doctor who may prescribe medication designed to alleviate swelling.
