March 30, 2001, Newsletter Issue #25: Tests During Pregnancy

Tip of the Week

For most of us, the first test in our pregnancy that we take is the "Pregnancy Test" itself. Are we or aren`t we? Buying a kit at the drugstore can be an expensive hobby, so make sure you wait until your period is at least a couple of days later. In some people, the tests can report a positive result much earlier than that, but not in everyone. So unless you have some other definite signs of early pregnancy, such as sore breasts, extreme fatigue, or nausea, try to hold out a couple of days before testing. I know how difficult that is though - I almost bankrupted our housekeeping by testing month after month!

Your doctor`s surgery can also take a test for you, but they usually request that you wait until your period is a week late before they will do it.

False negatives in home pregnancy tests are common. If you take the test and it is negative, but your period still doesn`t show up, wait a week and then test again. The tests rely on hormone levels, and sometimes these levels aren`t reached in the early weeks of pregnancy - even a doctor`s test can give a false negative in these cases.

Unless you are taking some kind of medication containing hormones, a false positive is almost impossible. If you get the appropriate symbol in the second box, you are more than likely pregnant - CONGRATULATIONS!
