May 18, 2001, Newsletter Issue #32: Birth Plan: 3

Tip of the Week

Whilst making a birth plan is a good thing, and the only way you can be sure that everyone is aware of your wishes for the birth, you need to keep a flexible approach because even in the most straight-forward of pregnancies, things come up during childbirth that weren`t expected and can mean a complete change of plan.

The safety and well-being of both you and the baby has to come first, even if things don`t go the way you hoped they would, and although you may want to fight the Drs against certain procedures, the most important thing is to deliver that baby safely into the world. There are times when a baby just wont come naturally for whatever reason and needs to be c-sectioned, there are babies that are just too big, or are positioned in a difficult way for birth, there are babies that take hours - my sister took 36 hours of labor before a c-section delivered a 10.5 lb baby - then there are babies who need a little help out with suction. As much as you don`t want pain relief, foetal monitoring, suction or whatever, you must be prepared for the fact it may be necessary.

Before you go into labor consider what may happen and how you would like to deal with it. If a c-section is advised, and there`s a big game on TV, you might be suspicious that your Dr just wants you delivered quickly so he can check out the score. On the other hand, even during big games, babies do have difficulties! No pain relief is fine, but what if your labor stretches into 15-20-30 hours? At what point do you want to say "enough"? Talk all of this through with your birth partner so that they can help you to make the decisions if required.

Hopefully, after all this preparation, baby will arrive into this world after a few hours of labor and a half hour of pushing - but at least you were prepared, just in case!
