April 20, 2001, Newsletter Issue #28: Tests During Pregnancy

Tip of the Week

The Gestational Diabetes test is usually done around weeks 24-28, unless your routine blood-work shows a high sugar count in which case they may test earlier.

It is a painless test in that it doesn`t require a needle (one of the few pregnancy tests that doesn`t!) but it has its own horrors. It`s a syrupy drink and I`ll let you into a secret - it tastes disgusting. I`ve been on a number of discussion boards and pregnancy mailing lists and I`ve yet to meet a woman from anywhere in the world who liked it! On top of the taste being horrible, another downside to this test is that you can`t eat before it. So, I have two tips for you.

1. If you get a choice of flavours for the drink - opt for the orange one. General consensus is that this is the least sickly of them. You might not think so, but hey, you didn`t try the others! LOL

2. Try and schedule your appointment for first thing in the morning so that you can go straight to the test, and then have your breakfast afterwards.
